Summary:  Innovative vision training is a crucial component to becoming a successful hitter.  V-Flex offers a new approach for training hitters to see the ball clearer than ever before. V-Flex is the only patented process avaliable that strengthens and conditions the hitters’ visual system while taking batting practice. The focus created in the brain by V-Flex offers a resistance factor for the visual system that allows the eyes and brain to exercise so the entire visual system becomes stronger and stays “center focused” longer.  Players all across the USA are experiencing remarkable improvements as a result of better pitch recognition and V-Flex is honored to be a part of their success. Over 37 team records were broken in 2013 alone.

Description:

Article:  How long has it been since you learned something refreshingly new about baseball or softball, something so unique that it is without a doubt Original? Having access to knowledge never before revealed is critical to the advancement of hitting. Without it, our players can’t overcome their weaknesses and as instructors, we are doomed to a life of mediocre and inconsistent results. This article is a bold attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding how baseball and softball coaches teach hitting. It is meant to be the cornerstone of hitting instruction from a “brain based perspective”; a perspective where brain-based training techniques take precedence over outdated and gimmick-based approaches.   The time has come for coaches to re-evaluate how they are teaching pitch recognition and strike zone development. Vision research has allowed us to move into a new era of training and V-Flex is the first patented brain training system to be introduced to baseball and softball and it has created a firestorm of interest. V-Flex is a versatile system which is also being used to treat patients with certain eye impairments.   Dr. Larry Lampert a Sports Vision Specalist in Boca Raton, FL who has appeared as a consultant on ESPN's Sports Science uses V-Flex for visual therapy on his patients baseball and softball clients regularly.  The patented V-Flex system trains hitters to swing at strikes by enriching the training environment in the hitter’s brain. Since launching at the ABCA Convention in Anaheim, CA in January, 2012 V-Flex has already spread into 29 states and over 30 NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA conferences.  V-Flex was seen for the first time on ESPNU during the SEC tournament on May 11, 2013 during the Arkansas vs Missouri softball game.  Teams using V-Flex are winning championships at an astounding rate and players are breaking records all across the country.  In the near future V-Flex trained teams and players will possibly hold every hitting record on the books.

Coaches across America are scrambling to find solutions to their hitting woes. New bat regulations have placed a premium price on good pitch selection and never in the history of the game have hitters needed an objective training system more than now.   Hitting instructors have been teaching pitch recognition according to their own ideas and intuitions for the past 150 years and all of them lacked a “brain-based” foundation. Now, every hitter in America from Little League to Major League Baseball are struggling with pitch recognition because of the lack of objective training. Technically an objective trainer conditions hitters to swing at strikes regardless of who’s teaching the skill.   V-Flex is that trainer because it establishes the standard teaching model for training pitch recognition and strike zone development.   Coaches that have adopted its principles are seeing their hitters make great strides toward becoming more disciplined at the plate.

For some coaches the move toward training with the V-Flex system happens relatively fast and with very little adaptations. For others the process requires more time and formal investigation because their unfamiliarity with brain based training. V-Flex is an objective system which means; it makes no difference if you’ve been coaching for 25 years or 5 years this system yields results based on its scientific foundation and not the amount of coaching experience one has.

tony-gwynn.jpgIt took eight- time MLB batting champion Tony Gwynn one on site demo to understand the importance of using V-Flex to train pitch recognition.   I met Tony at Western Carolina University in the spring of 2011 while his San Diego State University Aztecs were playing a 3 game series there. I presented him with the data I had collected during the patent process and with the rough draft to the book “Turn Your Brain On” which I have now published. He read the book on the flight back to San Diego and within a week I was in San Diego demonstrating the system for Tony and his staff.   Also, while there I presented the system to the SDSU softball coaches Kathy Van Wyk and Stacy Nuveman who began training with the system before I left California. Baseball and softball teams alike are taking advantage of this new style of training that is changing offensive numbers for hitters in both sports.

New technology is most readily accepted by innovative style coaches. The early adopters never ask “Who’s using the product?” they simply want a good demonstration with pertinent information so they can decide for themselves if the system is going to benefit their players.     The ultimate goal of V-Flex Technologies Inc. is to provide every team in America with an objective trainer that strengthens the visual system and enhance hitters ability to swing at strikes regardless of gender, social status, demographics or level of play. The list of teams using the product in baseball and softball is growing daily and V-Flex is proud to be a part of their success. I will list a few here so you can see the innovators we’ve met most recently;

Softball:  2013 WCWS Champion Oklahoma, University of Florida, University of Arizona, University of Auburn, University of Arkansas, University of California Berkeley, University of Tennessee, University of Louisville, San Diego State University, University of Michigan, West Chester University, Walters State Community College, Virginia Intermont College, Northeast Mississippi Com. College, Georgian Court University, Coastal Carolina University, Univ. of South Carolina, Iowa State University, Embry Riddle University, Oklahoma State University, Utah State University, Iowa State University, Villanova University, Columbus State University, Michigan State University, Baylor University and the University of Georgia.

Baseball: Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, North Carolina State University, Duke University, Wake Forest University, San Diego State University, Middle Tennessee State University, University of Michigan, Tennessee Tech University, Carson Newman University, Northeast Mississippi Com. College, The Woodlands High School, TX, Berea College, Roane State Com. College, Lincoln Memorial University, Francis Marion University,UT Martin, University of Alabama Birmingham and Baylor University.

In 2007 I applied for a United States patent on a brain-based hitting system so the foundation could be laid banner-v-flex.jpgfor objective training of the strike zone. It took fifteen years of research and 4 additional years within the patent process to obtain the patent because of it being an intellectual property patent. This type of patent had to meet certain criteria to even be considered for such a status. It was forged under extreme scrutiny by the examiners at the U.S. patent office and was awarded a coveted utility patent.    It was a long grueling process that seemed to last forever and cost a small fortune, but in the end it was very rewarding to possess such a valuable patent. Its impact is already being felt in baseball and softball but all sports and learning in general will eventually be impacted because it focuses on turning the visual centers of the brain on during training.

No matter what your reasons for accepting change or rejecting change one thing is for certain, hitters are under unprecedented pressure to perform and strikeouts are at an all-time high and continue to rise. This rise in strikeouts at every level of the game is the driving force ushering in the onset of change. Change is inevitable no matter what field or occupation we pursue. Baseball has been without significant changes in training since the 1800’s. The intellectuals of the sport have tried everything imaginable in an attempt get a competitive edge over their opponents but to no avail. Fortunately the winds of change are beginning to blow bringing with them a new era in hitting. Brain training in a free space environment will forever transform how we teach and train pitch recognition.

Here is how your move to V-Flex will transpire. For the most part coaches are secure in their own environments but when someone challenges their knowledge or reasons for training a specific way they get a little testy.   I’ve learned to not take their negativity too personal because they are speaking from a defensive posture. Until they understand the criteria for brain based learning they are at a disadvantage and that’s something they can fix by studying and learning about the brain. This stage of rebellion is directed toward knowledge itself and no one in particular. Truth in hitting has been an elusive thing, simply because coaches are searching for their own truth and not objective truth. Coaches need a system that trains hitters to swing at strikes regardless of who is teaching the skill. V-Flex does that because it speaks to the brain in it’s dominate language, the language of light. Light is constant throughout the universe and our brains are sensitive to its properties.

Often times the second stage of discovery leading to V-Flex is tied to an “Ah ha” moment, the moment when the missing piece of a puzzle is put into place and the grandeur of the big picture changes one’s perspective forever.   By exposing coaches to the techniques for enhancing the focusing power of the brain their eyes are opened figuratively speaking and they can clearly see how V-Flex impacts the hitter’s brain. The missing piece of the strike zone is what the brain needed to formulate a working model of the strike zone.

imaginary-v-fig-1.jpgThe area in (Fig.1) where the two forms, (broken circle & broken V) intersect is the area where brain activity is the greatest. Energy is being generated in that particular area and nowhere else.   It is extremely important that the strike zone be represented by (generated energy) and not reflected light. Building a benchmark location in the brain that will be used to create consistency in the brain is necessary if we want our hitters to become more disciplined. This benchmark location holds 7 baseballs and is shown in (Fig.2). Fifteen years ago I had a revelation of biblical proportions and my life was changed forever. One moment of clarity impacted me so profoundly that I can’t go back to the time before V-Flex because there is no truth there; only noise. Coaches from Little League to MLB teach the strike zone differently and that only adds to the confusion of trying to decide on which pitches to hit and which ones to pass up. The photos showing the patented area of focus is representative of the best pitches to swing at when the ball is 12’ from home plate. V-Flex is basically a series of prompters that can be used during batting practice to help the eyes focus in the center of the strike zone.   By forcing the eyes to look toward “true center” the brain receives a clearer signal from the ball and the result is better contact by the hitter. All hitters’ eyes have imperfect gazes so in order to compensate for that feature in the brain we are forced to train with a device that is capable of helping our brains recalibrate true center. Training the strike zone in real time in a free space environment helps hitters’ see the entire spectrum of the strike zone from its optimal point.

v-with-7-baseball.jpgAcquiring knowledge is one thing; applying knowledge is entirely something different. The seven ball strike zone at 12’ in front of home plate represent a benchmark location that helps hitters create consistent pitch recognition. By the time those seven pitches reach home plate they have expanded into a 33 pitch “core hitting zone”.   This core hitting zone represented in(Fig 3) is the key to the hitters’ success.   Mastering this area is directly linked to the 7 pitch benchmark shape and location in front of home plate.

Bringing this intellectual property to market in the toughest environment in the sports industry is no small task. Baseball is steeped in tradition and there is a lot of old blood out there. It’s not my intent to disregard everything we’ve loved about the game all of these years but the alarm has been ringing since the 1970’s when pitchers began their reign of dominance and this wakeup call is a little overdue.

Hitting instructors and coaches are doing a great job of teaching and training the mechanics of the swing but in the area of pitch recognition they haven’t quite solved the riddle, primarily because we have become reformist. The word “reform” means to improve. Reforming something requires rearranging something that already exists and for years coaches have been trying to improve their methods of teaching pitch recognition. But by hanging on to what they already know and trying to fix it hasn’t worked.   Hitting coaches are notorious for rephrasing their words when they feel players don’t comprehend what they are teaching. This amounts to the same old approach spoken a different v-with-33-baseball-fig-3.jpgway. The players sometime get the coaches meaning and can apply the concept in practice but not in the game. This is because the learning was done on a conscious level. In order to truly affect behavior learning must be done on a neurological level. Very little verbal instruction is needed during strike zone training and we all know how hitting coaches love to talk that talk.

V-Flex technology is cutting edge and revolutionizing the approach to how strike zone development and pitch recognition are being taught.   The word “revolution” means to make a drastic change or complete change. The change that V-Flex brings to the game breaks from traditional ways of trying to reform hitters.   It creates entirely new ones by restructuring the brains infrastructure and perception of the strike zone during training.  Certain things must be in place so their brains can build electrical associations and learn on a neurological level. Building pitch patterns that represent the strike zone in a brain that has seen thousands and thousands of pitches requires a revolutionary approach. Creating a new strike zone requires creating new growth neurologically, neurogenesis. This can’t be achieved by changing the way we say something to get our point across. It requires changing the electromagnetic stimulus from the ball so the brain will formulate a new response. This is how physical change occurs.

Tim Walton, Head Softball Coach at the University of Florida understands the complexities of learning tim-walton-and-kenny.jpgand how important it is that pitch recognition be taught correctly. He has a great understanding of the bio-mechanics of the swing and the mental approach that lends itself to success under pressure. His own ability to adapt and recognize the benefits of training with V-Flex underscores how important it is that leaders lead. Leaders are a different breed and his insightfulness allows him to lead the Gator hitters with confidence as they learn and work on strike zone development.

Coaches find that throwing through the V-Flex screens and arch is very easy and productive. We’re already receiving testimonials from across the U.S. stating how improved tossing is with the system and how fast players respond to the new training. Our engineers worked hard to design a set of user friendly products that coaches could use daily. Time is a scarce commodity because the NCAA and other state governing bodies are limiting the amount of time a player can receive instruction form coaches.

In the state of Tennessee there are dead periods where coaches must remove themselves from their players for months at a time.   During those times it’s crucial that player on player batting practice be optimized.   V-Flex training is invaluable during these periods because the devices do the actual training regardless of who is tossing the ball. The team captain can oversee the implementation of the system and get a tremendous return on time invested. That’s the beauty of an objective training system.

The objective is to train hitters to swing at strikes which V-Flex does. University of Arkansas Head Softball Coach Mike Larabee stands beside the “front toss” training device which increases his hitters focus during front toss training.  Mike sent V-Flex the following text 3 weeks following the purchase; “Players buying into V-Flex. Getting much more disciplined at the plate and making me throw better BP. We are using V-Flex every day during individual hitting”.

mark-larabee-at-arkansas-mike.jpgI’m excited for Mike and his staff; Coy Adkins and Sue Carpenter because they are in the hunt for a National Championship and V-Flex training will be crucial to their success.   There is nothing more important than discipline at the plate when championships are on the line. Knowing that your team has trained objectively gives the coaches and players a certain amount of confidence under pressure that translates into execution when the game is on the line.

Swinging at bad pitches is a symptom of a flawed training system. Although we will never do away with the problem entirely we can do much better than we are currently doing. From an applied science point of view, when batters are struggling at the plate, their problems come from both poor pitch recognition and threshold issues.
V-Flex addresses the (causes) of both problems therefore effecting their behavior and creating a more disciplined hitter.

Developing pitch patterns plays in strike zone development but another essential component for developing better strike zone discipline lies in our ability to target the firing mechanisms in the brain. Nestled inside each hitter’s brain is swing threshold. Threshold means the point at which a strike generates a swing. It is the hardest of all things to find and control.   A true threshold is represented by an edge. For example; if a batter becomes too aggressive, or to close to the “edge”, he or she may appear to swing at anything. The catalyst for generating the swing is what we must focus on as hitting instructors.

Since we know that we are dealing with light energy we should understand that this threshold refers to a hitter’s sensitivity to light. Revolutionizing this part of training is also essential to maximizing the hitter’s ability to master strike zone awareness and game time hitting performance. As I mentioned earlier, revolution means to change completely and if we don’t change our data input pattern along with our new pitch pattern then we won’t see as much change in hitters as we should.   V-Flex strives to create the best learning environment possible for the developing hitter and the design of the Front Toss Arch and V-Screen helps instructors take full advantage of the training opportunity.

The concept of associational learning has been accepted as a primary source of learning for many years. Building associations requires a systematic approach to training. Breaking away from tradition can be a daunting task and I realize that this is a steep hill to climb but something positive is going to happen for everyone who adopts this system of training.

It took several years to identifying why hitters swing at bad pitches neurologically.  If your hitters are always striking out by swing at balls, they are suffering from “threshold anxiety”. This phrase represents the uneasy feeling a hitter gets when they “feel” they aren’t going to have enough time to get the bat into the contact zone. Whether it’s a slow bat, slow hips or poor vision players try to compensate by starting the swing earlier. It’s very humiliating for the hitter and his instructor as well when a player swings when the ball hits 3 feet in front of home plate.  The brain is very sensitive to light and the tiniest of signals can cause an unwanted swing. There is an enormous amount of energy projecting form the pitchers body as they release the ball and this initial burst of light energy will often be a sufficient catalyst for generating a swing by the hitter.   Training a hitter to feel that initial flash of energy generated by the pitcher body requires throwing batting practice differently. Primarily coaches throw strike after strike during batting practice so their hitters “get their swings in”. They need to be aware of how much damage throwing strike after strike after strike to a developing hitter is. They believe they are training correctly and out working their opponent but they are simply handicapping their hitters by creating threshold blindness.

lmu-3-bordered.jpgBy throwing batting practice differently and using the V-Screen hitters can build an associational awareness between the pitcher and the pitch.   Training the batter to be aware of how much they are responding to the pitchers body helps them develop sensitivity to the stimulus.   As pitchers throw batting practice using the V-Flex screens they are instructed to throw no more than three strikes in a row so hitters don’t fall into the trap of thinking every pitch is going to be a strike. When that occurs their body and mind become vulnerable to swinging at balls. Primarily because they are staying too close to their swing threshold. They become accustom to seeing lots of strikes in a row and because their bodies are in a sensitive launch position they swing at balls and not strikes. In order to overcome this issue hitters should not see more than 3 strikes in a row during bp. Also, when balls are thrown, they should mostly be thrown into the V-Screen and or Pop Toss nets. This prevents the hitter from tracking the pitch all the way to home plate and forces them to respond to the pitchers body only. This procedure acts as a default mechanism for the batter forcing him or her to return to their initial starting position. Instructors will witness hitters as they become more and more disciplined at the plate due to the fact that they are being “disciplined” by their trainer, V-Flex.

Even though V-Flex is a patented procedure specifically designed to be used in strategic ways some coaches still throw batting practice the same way they did using their L-Screen. Their savior has been repetition, repetition, repetition and they continue to force their players to swing, swing, and swing; throwing their intelligence and intellect out the window. The truth is; repetition formatted correctly will yield results and nothing else.

Presently, the brain is being forced to use certain markers for building a representation of the strike zone. Formatting is being done using the following variables as the ball travels toward home plate.

  • The first place the brain sees the ball
  • The last place the brain sees the ball
  • The swing (the electrical event that triggers the brain to store the two coordinates as a pattern)

This is the format the brain has used ever since the first baseball was hit. It hasn’t been able to evolve beyond that point because we haven’t given it a better way to format. The brain is a creator and given a different set of variables fashioned out of energy gives it an opportunity to create a much clearer representation of the strike zone. The most beneficial part of the new formatting protocol is that it is more efficient neurologically. Therefore, it requires less repetition.   In essence, used correctly ten minutes using V-Flex will yield better results than 30 minutes would without it.

Changing methodologies and training tools haven’t worked in the past and that is why so many coaches are reluctant to change what they are currently doing. V-Flex is the exception to that rule. Players training on the V-Flex System are seeing much improved discipline at the plate. Being the first on the scene to introduce “brain training” to the games of baseball and softball is what makes V-Flex the exception. Being brain based is a notable distinction that has placed V-Flex ahead of every other training system in the game.  There are other human behavioral fields that are pushing the boundaries of new age treatments such as EMDR , Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for Post Tramatic Stress Disorder.  Their success rates at the EMDR Institute are eye opening.  Visit them at www.emdr.com

Ultimately all coaches will come to a much clearer understanding of V-flex technology. It is difficult now because the “noise” is so loud, noise from past experiences; present endeavors and future ambitions. Building a “real” strike zone in the brain is a hefty job. Before the age of V-Flex we weren’t able to offer the brain a better solution for hitting the baseball or softball. That is why it always defaults back to how it learned a particular skill initially.   Without V-Flex no coach can offer the brain anything it hasn’t already seen before.

There are several functioning mechanisms in the brain that must be manipulated in order to begin building a better representation of the strike zone in the brain. One example is stabilized fading.

The final stage of discovery and move to V-Flex exemplifies coaches learning to rise above the chatter by listening for the sound of silence. V-Flex speaks to the hearts and minds of all who see it. There are a variety of expressions displayed as coaches see V-Flex for the first time. It ignites a deeper understanding of strike zone development and pitch recognition. They realize something changed and it wasn’t them. It was the world around them.

brandon.jpgHitting instructor and intellectual guru Marty Rubinoff sent me a couple of quotes that he uses while training his students with the V-Flex System in Waco, TX that may shed more light on how to communicate verbally what V-Flex is saying visually. The first quote is by Rudy Jaramillo formerly with the Texas Rangers now with the Chicago Cubs; “Think with your eyes”. The second quote is by Dennis Rogers of the Victoria Baseball Club in the West Coast League and Head Coach of Riverside College in CA, “Take pitches with your eyes and not your body”. Both statements are solid conceptually and I understand their meanings.   I also understand as does Marty that the tools and building blocks necessary for those statements to have life beyond the realm of conscious thought require V-Flex. V-Flex Technologies brings innovation, power and discipline to all players powered by V-Flex.
