The Meyer Sound SB-3F sound field synthesis loudspeaker is a high powered, long-throw device capable of projecting mid-high frequency energy over distances of up to 1 km. The SB-3F achieves a narrow coverage angle by employing sound field synthesis technology with multiple small point sources to achieve a coherent sound field. The SB-3F was designed to solve one of the most common problems in large-scale sound reinforcement: effective intelligibility at great distances in the frequency area of 2 kHz to 9 kHz. The SB-3F complements and integrates smoothly and easily with other Meyer Sound products like MILO and MICA in large scale applications.
The SB-3F loudspeaker is comprised of 448 one-inch neodymium transducers - each a powerful point source with a wide dynamic range that can accommodate signals with high peak-to-average ratios - that combine to produce a highly directional wavefront that propagates smoothly over long distances with minimal side and rear lobing. Designed and manufactured at Meyer Sound's Berkeley, California factory, the transducers are built for reliability and used exclusively in Meyer Sound field synthesis products. The SB-3F is a self-powered loudspeaker incorporating a multi-channel, high-power, class AB/H power amplifier and sophisticated control circuitry - all housed within the loudspeaker's cabinet, which dramatically simplifies setup and installation.
The SB-3F's on-board amplifier delivers 9000 W of total burst power. This modular, field-replaceable amplifier/processing package requires 220 V AC and provides both soft turn-on and transient protection. The SB-3F comes standard with Meyer Sound's RMS remote monitoring system, which offers comprehensive monitoring of system parameters on a Windows-based computer. “The Big House,” aka Michigan Stadium, got even bigger in 2011 when the University of Michigan completed an expansion and upgrade that included a large complement of equipment from Meyer Sound.
At a capacity of almost 110,000, Michigan Stadium is the largest sports venue in the United States and third largest in the world. To address the sound reinforcement needs on such a scale, the PA system includes 28 Meyer Sound MILO 60 line array loudspeakers, eight SB-3F sound field synthesis loudspeakers, four MSL-4 loudspeakers, a Galileo loudspeaker management system with two Galileo 408 processors, and an RMS remote monitoring system.
Ann Arbor, Mich.-based TeL Systems and Dallas-based consulting firm WJHW, Inc. were critical to the massive undertaking. TeL Systems’ former systems designer, Peter O’Neil, recalls the importance of selecting Meyer Sound equipment for the success of the expansion and upgrade.
“One of the things that has really stood out about Meyer Sound is how well it performs when it’s pushed hard,” O’Neil says. “That’s not true of all large-format sound reinforcement boxes.”
Particularly effective in handling sound for the massive size and scope of the stadium were eight weather-protected SB-3F sound field synthesis loudspeakers. “We had to install a point-source system in one of the end zones and throw sound upwards of 800 feet—in the open-air environment and with the weather changing all the time,” O’Neil explains. “The Meyer [SB-3F] is the only product of its sort that’s designed to throw specifically high-frequency sound at that distance. It’s a level beyond what we had before with horn-based technology. We were fortunate to work with a consultant who knew the product and how to design with it.”

Lift Gate Service:
A liftgate is a motorized platform attached to the back of the truck that will physically lower your order to the ground, so that you can take it inside your business or residence. The truck driver will place your order on the ground, and you are responsible for bringing it inside. If you do not have a loading dock or a forklift, you will need a liftgate and must select this option at checkout. The charge for the liftgate is $75.00.
