The Neo D Plan series consists of high performance plan objectives designed to offer all the performance characteristics of the 

M S Plan and the Neo S Plan series lenses with the additional function of incident light darkfield observation, 

and may be used for super widefield observation and are designed with cost·performance in mind.

Contrary to popular opinion, these instruments can be useful for observation of many types of biological specimens.

However, because of the designation "metallurgical", there is a tendency to avoid using them for this purpose, even when ideal biological applications arise.

Sometimes these instruments are referred to as "Inspection microscopes". A great many of them are used for examination of industrial parts—especially in the semi-conductor industry. 

They generally were also made to very high standards in the first place.

Intended for Olympus microscopes, also usable with other metallurgical scopes from Zeiss, Leica, Leitz or Nikon.
