Helms was born in 1933 in Osnabrück, German. From 1952 to 1958 he studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and at the Kunsthochschule Kassel.

He also graduated from German Studies and Literature at the University of Hamburg.

Between 1965 and 1975, Helms wrote texts on contemporary art and art criticism for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in parallel to his own artistic activity.

In 1968 he was a member of the Documenta Council, the International Art Criticism Association and a member of the Board of the Foundation for the Arts in Bonn.

To this day he is a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbundes (German Association of Artists).

Dietrich Helms was a founding member of the International Artists' Association and from 1978 to 1981 his President.

He worked on the conception of important exhibitions such as the documenta 5 in 1968 and the multi-part exhibition "Typography can possibly be art" in Wiesbaden, Hanover and Zurich in 1989 and 1990.

Since 1978, Dietrich Helms has worked with the Museum Wiesbaden to work on the estate of Osnabrück artist Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart.

"In his own art production, Dietrich Helms came to form material-bound objects according to structural drawings and color plates, later to image series resulting from a direct approach to the possibilities of material processes and to strings which, in each case, made possible open results within a conceptual framework."

In USA Helms is also respected by his analyses on Pop Music. You can find many of his theoretical books translated into English.
