I’m so privileged to have had the opportunity to travel to Italy and learn a bit about its culture and popular art.
Roosters and chickens are a big deal in Italian tradition! They have an important symbolic meaning; not just in Italy but also in Portugal. (We will talk about Portugal later).
The origin of Ceramic Roosters and chickens in Italy goes all the way back to the Medici’s - the wealthiest family in the Republic of Florence. Their rivals, the Pizza family knew that Giuliano, one of the Medicis, loved parties. Once when Giuliano was given a party in Gallina, they decided that they were going to kill him.
After the party Giuliano and his friends were sleeping when they heard desperate cries from the roosters and chickens. That was what saved them from the assassins who were sent from the Pizza family.
The following night, Giulliano gave another party to celebrate his victory. He was thrilled that the Roosters & Chickens had saved him! Later he ordered his artisans to create ceramic copies of the Roosters to be used as wine pitchers, and gave these pitchers to all the peasants of the village as a symbol of good luck in warding off assassins. That’s why it’s now an Italian tradition to give a rooster pitcher to friends or family as a symbol of good luck and to protect them from danger!
